Chaos Inside Hegseth’s Defense Department Left Trump Concerned as Military Leaders Depart

Sylvia’s departure amid Iran tensions

Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, the Pentagon’s top military planner, was fired by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The move came as President Donald Trump openly considered the possibility of further strikes on Iran after the midterms.

A Joint Staff spokesperson thanked Sylvia and his family for 32 years of service and said they wished them well. Sylvia’s exit was described as the latest in a series of senior military departures.

Hegseth defends seniority cuts

At a speech at Marine Corps Base Quantico in September, Hegseth announced another 10 percent reduction in positions reserved for generals and admirals, following a 10 percent cut to those roles in 2025. Hegseth rejected critics’ description of the changes as a purge, calling them accountability and saying they were overdue. He also argued that unity, rather than diversity, was the strength of the military.

A widening list of departures

Among the earlier departures was Gen. Charles Q Brown Jr, a 40-year Air Force veteran who was replaced as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff by Lieutenant General Dan “Razin’” Caine in February 2025. Hegseth also fired Navy chief of operations Franchetti that month without giving an explanation.

The article also recounts the departures of senior officials from the National Security Agency, the NATO Military Committee, the Air Force and the Defense Intelligence Agency. DIA chief Kruse left after the agency assessed that Operation Midnight Hammer had been less effective than Trump and Hegseth had claimed.

Further changes during Iran conflict

After a quieter period, Hegseth dismissed the Army’s chief of staff in April this year, a little over a month into the Iran conflict. Gen. Christopher LaNeve became acting chief and has not yet been confirmed by the Senate.

Three weeks after George was dismissed, Hegseth ousted the Navy’s leader and installed then-undersecretary Hung Cao on an acting basis. The article says this followed Iran’s move to close the Strait of Hormuz, which caused a spike in global oil prices.
