Nine Months Early: Christine Lagarde to Resign as ECB President Before France’s Election

A successor before France votes

Lagarde’s departure will start a contest to lead the ECB against a turbulent eurozone backdrop. EU leaders will have time to choose a successor before France’s presidential election in April.

Polls have suggested that far-right candidate Marine Le Pen is favoured to win. President Emmanuel Macron, who cannot run again, thanked Lagarde for her leadership during a period of repeated crises.

Concerns over departure timing

German European Parliament member Markus Ferber cautioned that linking the departure to national elections could damage confidence in the ECB. He said the institution must remain above domestic political calculations. French Finance Minister Roland Lescure praised Lagarde’s tenure, saying she had modernised and strengthened the institution as Europe faced crises and difficult times.

Markets and policy pressures

Markets appeared largely unfazed by the news. Simon Dangoor of Goldman Sachs told Reuters he expected the ECB’s institutional behaviour to persist and remain broadly similar under a new leader.

The bank has faced criticism over what some viewed as a slow response to the 2022 inflation surge, which was linked to post-pandemic supply bottlenecks and the war in Ukraine. Inflation is now almost twice the ECB’s 2 percent target, as concerns grow about France’s public finances.

Key points

  • Lagarde will leave the ECB presidency in February, nine months before her eight-year term ends.
  • EU leaders can choose her successor before France’s April presidential election.
  • Markus Ferber warned that perceived links to national election timing could harm trust in the ECB.
  • Markets appeared unfazed, while inflation remains almost double the ECB’s 2 percent target.
