Ernie Johnson to hang up his NBA microphone after this season

A final season at the desk
Johnson said Wednesday that he will leave “Inside the NBA” after the current season. His departure will close a career that made him one of professional basketball’s most recognizable broadcasters.
He described the job as a privilege and thanked co-hosts Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley, as well as the production teams and leaders at TNT and ESPN. Johnson said the program had continued with their support.
Why he chose this moment
Johnson, 70, said preparing for every broadcast had become difficult enough to shape his decision to leave in 2027. He said he had long valued the work that went into getting ready for each show. Johnson said, “I’ve always prided myself on my preparation.” He explained that he had decided to step away when the demands of preparation became more difficult than enjoyable.
A 37-year run
Johnson called his role on “Inside the NBA” a “get-to” job and said he remained amazed that he could earn a living doing it. He said he had spent decades sharing the desk with his co-hosts. He also praised the show’s production crews as talented and devoted, and expressed appreciation for TNT and ESPN’s leadership for allowing the program to continue.
