After a Six-Decade Career, 17 Patrick Stewart Movies and Shows to Stream in Celebration of His Life

A career from stage to screen

Stewart’s death was announced “with great sorrow” in an Instagram post. The post said he died following a brief battle with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia. He built a six-decade career, first earning recognition on stage in Shakespeare plays. In 1987, he moved into a signature screen role as Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Returning as Jean-Luc Picard

After an 18-year break from the role, he returned for Paramount+’s Star Trek: Picard. The series ran for three seasons and follows Picard in retirement, roughly 20 years after the end of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Professor X and one final film

Stewart also became known for playing telepath Charles “Professor X” Xavier in Marvel’s X-Men franchise, opposite his close friend Sir Ian McKellen as Magneto. He appears as Xavier in several films, including X-Men: Days of Future Past, and has cameo roles in The Wolverine and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Stewart filmed one more performance as Xavier for Avengers: Doomsday, alongside many members of the original X-Men cast. The film is scheduled to reach theaters on December 18, 2026. The article lists his Professor Xavier titles as streaming on Disney+.

Other notable screen roles

Stewart played Gurney Halleck, a weapons trainer, in David Lynch’s Dune. The film initially failed with critics but later developed a significant cult following. He also earned an Emmy nomination for playing Captain Ahab in the two-part Moby Dick miniseries.

In Green Room, Stewart played the leader of a neo-Nazi group confronted by a punk band after its members witness a murder. One of his final film roles was voicing a sheep in The Sheep Detectives, a cozy mystery with a message about life, loss and grief.
