Alabama’s Biggest 2026-27 Basketball Roster Sleeper: The Minute That Could Matter

Diaz’s delayed debut
Diaz moved up from the 2027 recruiting class, but an elbow injury kept him out of Alabama’s preseason opener against Furman. Coach Nate Oats said on Oct. 8 that the freshman would miss about a month.
That timeline put Diaz’s possible return near the Oakland game on Nov. 9, Alabama’s third regular-season contest. He also missed exhibition wins over Ole Miss and Auburn. Alabama is emphasizing forwards and big men, and Diaz is among only three players on the roster shorter than 6-foot-6. That may give him a chance to help address the team’s limited guard depth, including by bringing the ball up off the bench.
A guard’s self-description
Diaz said his game relies on quick movement and attacking toward the basket. He also described Kyrie Irving as a comparison for his ability to get into the paint, finish and create for teammates.
The nickname “Shifty” reflects the style he hopes to bring to Alabama. His eventual contribution will depend in part on his recovery and availability.
Bristow earns Garrison’s vote
At SEC Tipoff ’27 in Birmingham on Oct. 13, Alabama forward Brandon Garrison named Keitenn Bristow as a roster sleeper. Garrison praised Bristow’s work and said his efforts were beginning to show.
Bristow appeared in 10 games during the 2025-26 season before an injury ended his year. In an Auburn scrimmage, he recorded nine points and a team-high eight rebounds, and earned the Hard Hat for collecting the most blue-collar points.
A role in the frontcourt
Oats said Bristow played nearly 30 minutes against Auburn, blocked four shots and rebounded well. He also praised Bristow’s defensive switching and said the junior could fit at the three or four in some lineups.
Forward depth could make it difficult to find playing time, but Bristow’s scrimmage performance gave the coaching staff reasons for optimism. Oats said it was good to have him back and playing hard.
