Tatum O’Neal Makes Rare Family Outing 6 Years After Near-Fatal Stroke

A rare appearance in Los Angeles

O’Neal, 62, wore a black dress, loafers and a navy jacket for the Oct. 24 outing. She used a cane as she walked alongside McEnroe, 35, and Massarelli.

Days earlier, O’Neal posted a smiling photo surrounded by family pictures. The Oct. 16 Instagram caption consisted of one word: “Hope,” she wrote.

Recovery after overdose and stroke

O’Neal suffered a near-fatal overdose in May 2020, followed by a massive stroke. The article says the COVID-19 pandemic, chronic pain and isolation contributed to a dangerous mix of pain medication, opiates and morphine.

She has spent years in therapy working to speak, read and walk again. In a 2023 interview with People, O’Neal said, “Every day, I am trying,” while discussing her effort to become sober.

Family describes her determination

O’Neal’s son Kevin said in a joint interview that she had become very isolated as pain and medication use intensified. He described the situation as frightening and said the circumstances left her with little hope.

In a February 2025 interview with Variety, O’Neal said she did not want to hurt herself or return to drugs. Kevin later told Variety that something in his mother continued to persevere through terrible situations.
