Ridley Scott’s thriller instantly finds redemption as streaming puts it among the biggest movies

Digital chart success
The Dog Stars placed third on the Apple TV Store’s US Top 20 Movies chart, according to FlixPatrol data. Its digital release came on October 27, nearly two months after its theatrical debut on August 28.
The chart also featured Forgotten Island at number 10 and Verity, starring Anne Hathaway, in first place. Both films became available on video-on-demand that same day.
A crowded movie lineup
The chart included several other high-profile titles, among them Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day and the James Gunn co-written Coyote vs. Acme. Runner, featuring Reacher star Alan Ritchson, was also listed.
Other movies on the chart included Obsession, Backrooms and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. The Dog Stars’ quick rise on the digital ranking offered a different result after its weaker theatrical performance.
Theatrical numbers fell short
With a reported budget of $110 million, The Dog Stars needed to earn an estimated $220 million to $275 million at the box office to break even. Its worldwide total was $39 million.
The R-rated film also received a 41% score from Rotten Tomatoes critics. That is the lowest critics’ score for a film directed by Scott since Exodus: Gods and Kings, which has a 29% rating.
