75 Songs Captured Raw Emotion After Miranda Lambert’s Divorce From Blake Shelton, She Makes Rare Comment on Misery

Turning heartbreak into songs

After her 2015 divorce from Blake Shelton, Lambert moved back to Nashville and began a new chapter as a single woman. She said she brought together friends and relationships from earlier years and used those experiences in her writing.

On the And The Writer Is... podcast on Oct. 27, Lambert said she used the misery of that period. She also recalled drawing on her life with songwriter friends and writing 75 songs.

Much of the year, she spent time with a guitar in hand while creating The Weight of These Wings. Lambert said the process helped her grow as a vocalist and songwriter.

A period of raw emotion

Lambert contrasted the album’s creative freedom with her earlier record Platinum. She said she was not writing toward a particular record, sound or attitude, but instead focused on raw emotion.

She described the creative experience as magical. The breakup, she said, was especially difficult because it happened during a public career and while she was on tour.

Life after the divorce

Lambert called the divorce a painful experience, saying it was hard for anyone and more so in the public eye. Shelton began dating Gwen Stefani in November 2015.
