Meet the Estonian Folklore Characters Helping to Celebrate the 30th Tallinn Fest – and Their Animator

A milestone for PÖFF
Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, known as PÖFF, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. For the occasion, the festival sought a visual identity for the first time. The new identity was presented as part of a plan to look ahead to the festival’s next decade. PÖFF head of marketing Maria Plees said the team wanted a fresh perspective and new traditions.
Pärn creates the concept
The festival turned to Priit Pärn, an Estonian cartoonist and animation filmmaker, to shape the creative idea. His work is intended to give the anniversary a distinctive visual identity.
Pärn told The Hollywood Reporter why he considered the Kilplased suitable for the festival poster. The characters come from Estonian folklore.
Folklore figures on the poster
Pärn described the Kilplased as foolish yet resourceful folk. Their qualities, he said, made them a fitting choice for the Black Nights Film Fest poster. The choice brings Estonian folklore into the festival’s anniversary identity. The project also marks the first time PÖFF has created a visual identity in its history.
