Deadspin: Jacob Fowler’s 46 Career-High Saves Help Canadiens Blank Blues on Road

Fowler withstands Blues pressure
The Blues outshot Montreal 46-20 and pressed especially hard in the third period, when they held a 24-3 edge. Jake Neighbours hit the post in the first period, while Philip Broberg led St. Louis with six shots.
Fowler’s 46 saves marked a career high and secured the shutout. Since 1955-56, only 25 Montreal goalies have made more than 46 saves in a regular-season game. He has two shutouts during a six-game winning streak and a .942 save percentage across seven games this season.
Montreal scores twice
Bolduc opened the scoring at 8:37 of the second period, finishing a pass from Matheson with a one-timer. His goal came three seconds after a Montreal power play ended; the Canadiens went 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
Xhekaj scored his first NHL goal at 2:17 of the third, tipping a Matheson shot. Video review confirmed the goal, ruling that the tip did not involve a high stick. It came in Xhekaj’s ninth career NHL game.
Road streaks continue
Montreal has won three straight, all on the road, and is 4-0-1 during a five-game points streak. The Canadiens are 6-1-1 over their last eight games. St. Louis has lost two straight and has been shut out in both. The Carolina Hurricanes beat the Blues 4-0 on Saturday. Blues coach Jim Montgomery pulled Jordan Binnington unusually early in the third, creating an extended stretch with six skaters; Montreal continued to clear the puck as Fowler held firm.
