Deadspin: Colten Ellis stops 23 shots as Sabres shut out Sharks 2-0

Ellis earns his second shutout
Ellis made 23 saves in his first appearance since being pulled early in the second period against the Florida Panthers on Oct. 12. He had allowed two goals on nine shots in that game.
Zellweger opens the scoring
Buffalo took a 1-0 lead 50 seconds into the second period. Konsta Helenius passed to Zellweger near the red line, and the defenseman carried the puck up the left wing before scoring from the top of the circle.
Owen Power assisted on the goal and also set up Benson’s third-period tally. The Sabres outshot San Jose 14-4 in the second, with Ellis making a stop on Collin Graf after a pass from Macklin Celebrini.
Benson seals Buffalo win
Buffalo snapped a three-game skid, having gone 0-1-2 during that stretch. The Sharks have now lost two games in a row.
Both goalies face chances
The teams traded opportunities in the opening period, with Buffalo holding a 16-12 edge in shots on goal. Askarov stopped Jack Quinn on a rush with a chest save.
Ellis blocked Adam Gaudette’s quick power-play attempt from the slot. Askarov later stopped Tage Thompson from the high slot and covered the rebound with Benson nearby.
