2027 Lexus TX Hybrid Adds Style and Upscale Vibe to the Basic Family SUV Formula

Power and road manners

The TX500h combines a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors for 366 horsepower. A six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive come standard; the TX550h+ plug-in hybrid has been discontinued.

The SUV handled well on winding roads near Austin, Texas, and reached 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. That acceleration is respectable for a vehicle weighing more than 5,000 pounds, but rough pavement can make the ride unsettled. The nonhybrid TX350 takes a softer approach.

The TX500h is rated at 27 mpg in city driving, 28 mpg on the highway and 27 mpg combined. In a 75-mph highway test, the all-wheel-drive TX500h F Sport Performance returned 26 mpg. Its 5,000-pound towing capacity is mid-pack for the segment; a dealer-installed hitch is required.

Room for passengers and cargo

The first and second rows are comfortable, with tasteful interior details. TX Hybrids come with second-row captain’s chairs that are heated and ventilated, along with dedicated climate controls and manual window shades.

Cargo space measures 20 cubic feet behind the third row, 57 with that row folded and 97 with the second-row seatbacks folded. In testing, five carry-on bags fit behind the third row, 13 behind the second row and up to 38 with both rows folded.

Screens, audio and safety

Standard displays include a 14-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 12.3-inch driver information screen. The cabin has seven USB-C ports and an available 120-volt outlet. A 12-speaker stereo is standard, while a 21-speaker Mark Levinson system is optional.

The available Technology Package adds a head-up display, a 360-degree camera view, a digital rearview camera and remote parking. Standard driver-assistance features include automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control with lane centering.

Ownership and trade-offs

European competitors offer more premium cabin materials, and the spindle grille may not appeal to everyone. Lexus’s limited warranty is similar to most rivals, while its powertrain warranty exceeds many; hybrid components receive longer coverage.

Complimentary scheduled maintenance lasts one year. BMW X5 and Volvo XC90 ownership includes longer maintenance terms. Buyers considering a lightly used vehicle may find a one-to-three-year-old TX with warranty coverage for less than a new model.

Key points

  • The TX500h makes 366 horsepower and comes standard with all-wheel drive.

  • The hybrid is rated at 27 mpg combined, and returned 26 mpg in a highway test.
  • Rough pavement can unsettle the ride, while the nonhybrid TX350 is softer.
