13 Greatest Saturday Night Halloween Skits, Ranked: SNL’s Spookiest Laughs

Songs and Halloween parties

Garth and Kat, played by Fred Armisen and Kristen Wiig, insist they have prepared songs, but their performances appear to be improvised. Their effort to keep from laughing adds to the sketch’s appeal.

A pre-recorded sketch follows three friends, played by Cecily Strong, Aidy Bryant and Vanessa Bayer, as their simple Halloween plans unravel. The story moves between what they expected and how the evening actually went; they are too drunk to remember much of it.

A party takes a turn

Andy Samberg’s Patrick hosts work friends played by Kenan Thompson, Taran Killam and Ben Stiller. They are eager to see Shana, a stylish co-worker played by Wiig, but her bad manners and gross behavior derail the gathering. Wiig also played Shana in sketches with Bryan Cranston and Charles Barkley.

Matt Foley scares the kids

Christian Slater, Melanie Hutsell and David Spade play misbehaving children who receive a stern talk from motivational speaker Matt Foley, portrayed by Chris Farley. Foley tries to frighten them with a story about egging a neighbor’s house, but his sweating, stumbling and shouting turn the effort into a mess.

An awkward Halloween introduction

While handing out candy, Bob Peterson, played by Jon Hamm, meets his new neighbor Jeff Montgomery, played by Will Forte. Jeff uses the encounter to share personal information that he is legally required to disclose. The sketch draws comedy from an ordinary Halloween activity turning into an uncomfortable introduction between neighbors.

A season one exorcism parody

In a Season 1 episode, host Richard Pryor and guest actor Thalmus Rasulala play priests called to perform an exorcism. Laraine Newman plays a possessed girl who writhes in bed and insults the priests’ mothers with oddly specific remarks.
