Mitte’s Mother Shares Tribute After His Death, Saying Family Feels Lost Without Him

A mother remembers her son

In an Instagram tribute, Dyna Mitte described R.J. as inspiring and generous from the time the family brought him home at three days old. She recalled how he worked to manage cerebral palsy and build an acting career, meeting each challenge with determination.

She also remembered his warmth, curiosity and ability to make people feel like family. Their travels for his work, from Florida to Lithuania, became opportunities to explore places he was eager to learn about.

Dyna said her son’s years of advocacy helped him develop empathy for people who needed a voice. She said the family would grieve him for the rest of their lives, while asking that his message and the foundation’s work continue.

Family urges attention to warning signs

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Dyna said she hoped sharing her experience could reach others who might be struggling. She encouraged parents to pay attention to signs of difficulty, whether clear or subtle, and to take steps to help.

She said she believed R.J. had moved past a difficult period and was doing well. Because they spoke regularly, she recognized his failure to answer the phone as a warning sign.

Career and memorial plans

R.J. Mitte was remembered at an Oct. 16 Celebration of Life at the Mitte Center in Brownsville, Texas. Hundreds attended, with others gathered in an overflow building. Dyna said the family was working on another celebration in Los Angeles for the end of the month.

Dyna also addressed speculation about her son’s career. She said three of his movies had come out that year, two more were forthcoming, and he had signed deals for several new films. She added that he had been planning a book and a food truck.
