Deadspin: No. 11 Texas Chases Consistency as Mississippi State Arrives in Austin

Texas Seeks Cleaner Play

Texas enters at 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the SEC, still in the College Football Playoff race. Against Ole Miss, the Longhorns overcame a collapse after leading by 21 at halftime to secure a 34-27 win.

Arch Manning committed three turnovers, while Texas drew a season-high 14 penalties for 134 yards. Coach Steve Sarkisian said the team needs to improve, particularly in managing emotion while playing aggressively on defense.

A Close Game Last Season

The Longhorns and Bulldogs met in a tight contest last season. Mississippi State held a 31-14 lead entering the fourth quarter, but Texas rallied to win 45-38 in overtime.

Texas has not played a true road game since Sept. 26. Saturday is its last home matchup before trips to No. 23 Missouri and No. 15 LSU.

Bulldogs Weigh Quarterback Options

Mississippi State is 4-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play after losing three consecutive games. The Bulldogs began the season 4-0 and reached No. 16, but Taylor has been limited by a toe injury.

Experience Could Shape Decision

Coach Jeff Lebby said he will evaluate Swann and Puckett during the week before deciding who offers the best chance to win. He also said the backup quarterback would not be expected to take on everything Taylor does.
