Why Amanda Seyfried Reveals She Turned Down Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy

Why Seyfried said no

In a career retrospective with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, Seyfried recalled that turning down the role seemed obvious to her at the time. She doubted the film would succeed and worried a failure could damage her career.

“I made it for myself,” Seyfried said, adding that she also considered the family she wanted to have. She said she still stands by the decision, despite acknowledging she was wrong about the film’s prospects.

Practical concerns shaped choice

Seyfried said she did not want to spend extended time in a makeup trailer. She also said she dislikes stunts and heights, and finds it difficult to pretend an entire world without something tangible to hold on to. Asked whether she would consider another superhero movie, Seyfried answered, “No, unless the superhero’s just, you know, walkin’ a lot.”

Gamora went to Zoe Saldana

Saldana ultimately played Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy and reprised the character in four other movies. Seyfried had previously said the studio had not called her back since she declined the part.
