Netflix Is Officially Removing Tom Hardy’s Divisive $1 Billion Epic

A major Nolan hit departs

The Dark Knight Rises is streaming on Netflix in the United Kingdom, but its availability there is ending soon. Released in 2012, it concluded Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy.

Before The Odyssey, it was Nolan’s highest-grossing film. Oppenheimer, released in 2023, earned nearly $1 billion worldwide, falling about $100 million short of The Dark Knight Rises. The Odyssey later grossed nearly $1.8 billion worldwide and set new personal box-office records for Nolan.

Hardy’s Bane stands out

Tom Hardy’s performance as the villain Bane remains one of the movie’s most remembered elements. Christian Bale returned as the lead, joined by Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The film initially received excellent reviews, though its reception has mellowed over time. Its place as the closing chapter of Nolan’s acclaimed trilogy and Hardy’s portrayal continue to define its reputation.

Nolan’s recent success

Nolan’s The Odyssey has received strong reviews and is considered a favorite in multiple Oscar categories. The film followed Oppenheimer, for which Nolan won his first Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director.

The two films mark a striking run for the director, whose earlier box-office benchmark was set by The Dark Knight Rises. The film’s impending Netflix departure applies to the United Kingdom.
