Jack Reacher’s Writing Shift: 29 Years Later, Lee Child Officially Steps Away, Exclusive

A series changes hands
Lee Child created Jack Reacher, a former military policeman, in the 1997 novel Killing Floor. The character has since led a long-running thriller series. With Chain Reaction, Andrew Child has assumed the main writing role. Lee confirmed that he is no longer closely involved in producing the novels.
A gradual handover
The brothers first worked together on The Sentinel, published in 2020. Lee then passed more responsibility to Andrew across later books. Andrew now writes the novels on his own, although Lee’s name remains attached to the series. Lee said he does not see manuscripts before they are sent to the publisher.
How Lee reads the books
Lee told Collider that Andrew keeps his work private, as Lee did when he was writing the series. He described their approach as improvised, without a long-term plot plan.
“I just get it when the publisher gets it, and I read it out of interest,” Lee told Collider. He said he does not know what a novel is about until it is finished.
