A South Korea shift makes Netflix's best action anime adaptation, released 7 months after One Piece, stand apart

A different kind of adaptation

One Piece is more popular on Netflix and has earned a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score after two seasons. But Parasyte: The Grey is presented as a strong rival for the service’s top live-action anime adaptation.

The series draws on Hitoshi Iwaaki’s manga, Parasyte, whose anime version, Parasyte: The Maxim, debuted in 2014 and became a cult classic. Like One Piece, its unusual premise and visual style might seem difficult to translate to live action.

A new setting and cast

Instead of directly reproducing its source, Parasyte: The Grey functions as a spin-off or parallel story set in South Korea. It introduces different characters and themes while keeping the alien-invasion premise at the center.

The story connects body horror to social divides and class warfare. The original manga and anime focus on Shinichi Izumi and Migi, the parasite that partially infects him, and tell a more contained story than One Piece’s expansive world.

Why the tone matters

One Piece had to bring its campy humor, broad comedy and unusual action scenes into live action. Although the series handles those elements well, the article says some scenes can resemble a costumed recreation of the source.

Parasyte: The Grey takes a more serious approach and largely leaves behind the original’s campier qualities. That choice lets it adapt the premise without relying on anime-style humor in a different medium.

Different stories need different choices

The article argues that One Piece could not have taken the same route without losing what defines it. Its character relationships and worldbuilding are central to its appeal, so replacing them with a new cast and setting would have made the series unrecognizable.

Other adaptations, including Dragonball Evolution and the 2017 Death Note, are cited as examples of projects that lost appeal by overlooking their source material’s strengths. Parasyte: The Grey, by contrast, preserves its central alien threat while reshaping the story for live action.

Key points

  • Parasyte: The Grey is described as narrowly edging out One Piece as Netflix’s best live-action anime adaptation.
  • The series relocates its story to South Korea and introduces new characters.
  • Its serious tone ties alien invasion and body horror to social divides and class warfare.
  • One Piece’s character dynamics and worldbuilding make a major departure from its source material unsuitable.
