Kryptonian Voices Haunt Superman as DC’s Iconic Lore Gets Rebooting 65 Years Later

The Phantom Zone Returns

The Phantom Zone has long served as a prison in Superman stories, most notably for General Zod. The concept debuted in 1961 in Adventure Comics #283, and now appears poised for a fresh interpretation in DC’s Absolute Universe.

Solicits for Absolute Superman #27 hint at Kal-El hearing familiar voices during the night. After his clash with Brainiac, Superman leaves Earth, and the voices may help explain why he has rarely been seen sleeping in earlier issues.

Krypton’s Fate Raises Questions

In this version, Krypton was destroyed after reckless mining and ecological abuse caused the planet to collapse into radioactive waste. Green Kryptonite emerged as the world suffered a violent end, and Kal-El was sent away.

His parents’ deaths are strongly implied, but not explicitly shown. That leaves the source of the voices uncertain; one possibility raised by the story is that Kryptonians were already imprisoned through undisclosed actions by the Science Guild.

Possible Encounters Ahead

Cover art appears to show Kal-El meeting familiar figures, potentially including members of the Labor Guild, which his parents belonged to. Their garments bear matching “S” shield insignias, but the artwork offers only limited clues about what the encounter will mean.

The voices could lead to allies such as Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl, or to familiar foes such as Zod and Ursa. It remains unknown whether any prisoners who emerge would follow Superman’s example or threaten another world.

Issue 27 Sets New Direction

Absolute Superman #27 is due January 6, 2027. Jason Aaron’s story is expected to take a new turn, with art possibly shifting from Rafa Sandoval to Mirko Colak.

Superman’s connection to the Kryptonian voices could become a major step in his life on Earth, where he has inspired people including Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen. For now, the identity and intentions of those calling from the Phantom Zone remain unclear.
