Coraline Is Officially a Streaming Hit Ahead of Wildwood, Renewing Interest in Laika’s Stop-Motion Masterpiece

Coraline finds a new audience

Laika’s stop-motion horror film Coraline is again drawing viewers as Wildwood arrives in theaters. At the time of writing, it is one of the most-watched movies on Hulu in the United States.

Wildwood reaches theaters

Wildwood is Laika’s latest feature and the studio’s return to filmmaking seven years after Missing Link. That film featured the voices of Hugh Jackman, Emma Thompson and Stephen Fry.

The animated film is based on the children’s fantasy novel written by Colin Meloy and illustrated by Carson Ellis. The book debuted at No. 7 on The New York Times Best Seller list and later became the first installment in a trilogy.

A long path to adaptation

Wildwood has been 15 years in the making. Laika first acquired the rights to the source material while helping produce its trailer in 2011. The film brings the novel’s story to the screen through a team of animators working in stop motion. Laika’s latest theatrical release arrives as Coraline’s streaming popularity puts another of the studio’s films in view.
