Shops, businesses and tourist sites closed as protests begin across France; Europe braces for demonstrations

Paris march route changed
Police changed the route for a trade union-organised march in Paris, which was initially approved to travel between Bastille and Nation squares. Their decree cited risks to public order, including the concentration of businesses similar to those targeted during the 17–18 October weekend.
Organisers challenged the decision in court, but the challenge failed. Demonstrators can march between Porte de Vincennes and Porte d’Italie from 1pm to 7pm; groups are preparing for a 2pm start through the 13th and 12th arrondissements.
Police deployed across France
France will deploy 70,000 officers around the country. In Paris, police are guarding main squares and government buildings, metro stations are closed, and most retail shops are shut or preparing to close.
Italy prepares for demonstrations
Italian police searched 150 homes in Milan and other cities ahead of protests expected on Saturday afternoon. The searches involved people suspected of planning to cause trouble, including 51 minors.
The demonstrations, organised by Movimento 17 October, are planned in Milan, Turin, Rome, Bologna, Naples and other places. Issues include the cost of living, school funding and support for Palestine.
