A 4-Part Netflix Weekend Binge Marks a Farewell for Gilmore Girls Fans

A return to Stars Hollow

Gilmore Girls follows Lorelai Gilmore, played by Lauren Graham, and her daughter Rory, played by Alexis Bledel, in the New England town of Stars Hollow. Their close relationship is tested when Rory enters a prestigious private school that Lorelai cannot afford, prompting Lorelai to seek help from her estranged parents, Richard and Emily.

The arrangement brings weekly Friday night dinners with Richard and Emily. The original series became known for quick dialogue and an eccentric supporting cast, airing more than 150 episodes after its 2000 debut on The WB. It later moved to The CW and was canceled in 2007.

The revival’s Netflix departure

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life is scheduled to leave Netflix on November 25, 2026, according to What’s On Netflix. The four-part revival arrived a decade before that scheduled removal, and each installment has an extended runtime and covers a season, beginning with “Winter.” The original Gilmore Girls left Netflix just months before the announcement. It is now available on Prime Video, Hulu and Disney+.

A later chapter for the characters

Set nine years after the original series finale, the revival follows Lorelai and Luke Danes, played by Scott Patterson, who remain unmarried. Rory is struggling to advance as a freelance reporter, while Emily is recently widowed after Richard’s death.

Many of the series’ major cast members returned, including Sean Gunn, Liza Weil, Keiko Agena and Yanic Truesdale. Melissa McCarthy also appeared as Sookie St. James. Richard’s death in the story reflected the 2014 death of actor Edward Herrmann.

A long-awaited ending

Amy Sherman-Palladino, the original creator and showrunner, left before the seventh season following contract disputes. David S. Rosenthal took over, and the cancellation meant neither showrunner wrote an official series finale.

The revival earned an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes but drew mixed reactions from fans, some of whom questioned its character development and ending. It nevertheless offered closure and answered questions about Sherman-Palladino’s intended finale.
