The Paper Flipped the Script on One of The Office’s Most Important Storylines

A romance takes a turn

The Office’s second-season finale ended with Jim and Pam kissing, raising expectations for their relationship. But the Season 3 premiere revealed that Pam stayed with Roy, while Jim transferred away from Scranton.

The Paper revisits that kind of separation through Mare and Ned. They kiss in the first-season finale, and Season 2 begins with the pair pursuing a mostly secret relationship.

Distance deepens the uncertainty

Mare accepts a temporary assignment in Cincinnati, filling in for a reporter on a sister newspaper who is on maternity leave. A serious miscommunication with Ned contributes to the move, while work decisions create legal complications.

Mare believes Ned’s feelings are weaker than they are, and she builds career connections in Cincinnati. Ned realizes he wants a life with her and is prepared to remain her friend if that is what she wants. Neither clearly shares those feelings with the other.

Their separation differs from Jim and Pam’s later long-distance period, when Pam attended art school. Mare and Ned had not established the same foundation as Jim and Pam, leaving their relationship more vulnerable.

A new office brings characters

Cincinnati’s newspaper belongs to the same company as the Truth-Teller, making Mare’s transfer resemble Jim’s move to Stamford. Both assignments give the characters a fresh start at work, away from relationship tension at home.

Jim’s Stamford stint introduced Karen Filippelli and Andy Barnard. Andy, played by Ed Helms, later became one of The Office’s popular characters. The Paper has already introduced Cincinnati writer Todd Dumph, played by Jon Lovitz. The character appeared in four episodes, and he or other Cincinnati figures could become regulars.

The move’s impact remains unclear

Mare’s relocation may broaden the show, but its long-term effect on The Paper’s story remains uncertain. The Office’s Stamford storyline suggests that a transfer can introduce characters and influence a show’s later direction.

Key points

  • Mare’s move to Cincinnati strains her relationship with Ned.
  • The storyline recalls Jim’s transfer from Scranton to Stamford in The Office.
  • Cincinnati introduces Todd Dumph, played by Jon Lovitz.
  • The move’s lasting effect on The Paper remains uncertain.
