Spotify’s Agentic AI Strategy: Claims It’s Unusually Well Positioned to Benefit From the Takeover

Spotify’s approach to AI agents
Söderström told investors Spotify is preparing for a future in which people use AI agents to access media. Rather than handing over its service, the company wants its systems to respond to requests that begin with third-party assistants.
A listener could ask an assistant to build a running playlist from their listening history. Spotify would then manage the request and deliver the music, according to Söderström. The company has also developed an agent that can communicate with external assistants.
Music, podcasts and partnerships
Spotify’s integrations let users request music, podcasts and audiobooks through other services, while Spotify handles recommendations and playback. The company also lets compatible agents save AI-generated podcast episodes privately to users’ libraries and wants to broaden that capability.
Spotify has signed integration deals with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. Last month, it announced a partnership with Meta’s Muse, with examples including playlists tailored to users’ daily routines.
Data benefits and privacy concerns
Söderström said Spotify would not provide proprietary user data to outside AI agents. Instead, those agents send requests to Spotify’s systems, which use what the company knows about a listener to choose what to play.
But requests can also reveal interests Spotify might not otherwise have learned. Söderström described that additional insight as a positive data loop for the company. The broader promise of connected AI agents has also prompted concerns about detailed user profiles, privacy and security.
More AI features on Spotify
Spotify is also adding AI tools to its own service, including an interactive assistant similar to ChatGPT. The company is developing a paid add-on for making AI-generated covers and remixes, which has not yet been released.
Söderström said Spotify aims to be an intelligent media service usable through its own app or another agent. The company is betting that people will continue to consume music and other entertainment themselves, even as AI assistants become more common.

- The company has integrations with ChatGPT, Claude and Meta’s Muse.
- Spotify says it will not share proprietary user data with third-party agents.
- Requests from AI agents may still give Spotify new information about listeners’ interests.
