Netflix’s 2-Part Cyberpunk 2077 Adaptation Is Officially a Smash Hit Worldwide

A franchise finds new momentum

Cyberpunk 2077 had a troubled launch in late 2020, but CD Projekt RED later introduced performance fixes and revamped game systems. The title is now regarded as a modern classic, and its Phantom Liberty expansion brought Idris Elba into Night City.

The 2022 Netflix anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners also helped renew interest in the franchise. Its success inspired an update to Cyberpunk 2077 that added items from the show, including David’s jacket and Rebecca’s shotgun.

Season two reaches the charts

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 launched on Tuesday, October 20, and received an 80% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Its audience score was 63% at the time of reporting. The series reached second place globally on Netflix, behind the thriller Below, which stars Josh Hartnett. In the United States, it ranked first overall, ahead of From, which recently moved over from MGM+.

A story set in Night City

The original series followed David Martinez, a street kid drawn into Night City’s criminal underworld after losing everything. He joined a group of edgerunners and pursued a relationship with hacker Lucy while using cybernetic enhancements that pushed his body to its limits.

The show’s animation by Studio Trigger and its story of survival, cyberpsychosis and romance earned strong praise. CD Projekt RED has revealed a new update for Cyberpunk 2077 as it looks to keep the game and series connected.
