Jack Reacher’s Most Grotesque Problem Is Officially Solved, Exclusive Lee Child Interview Reveals

Reacher’s technology gap
Reacher has no smartphone or permanent address and avoids social media. Lee Child said the character’s long-standing resistance to technology had become difficult to accept as the modern world changed.
Child recalled that when he began writing the series, the internet was not part of everyday life for him. In the first book, he wrote about academics using email as though it were an exotic tool.
Why the change mattered
Child said readers may find it reassuring when a hero is less technically capable than they are. But he felt Reacher had fallen so far behind that the gap no longer worked.
He described Reacher as a “kind of Luddite” and said the character’s relationship with technology had become almost absurd. The challenge was to preserve that quality without making Reacher implausible.
Andrew Child’s assignment
When Andrew Child began taking the lead on the series, Lee Child gave him a specific instruction: move Reacher forward slightly in his understanding of technology. Andrew’s experience in the technology industry made him well suited to the task.
Lee Child said the aim was not to make Reacher suddenly embrace smartphones and computers. Instead, he wanted the character to remain recognizable while showing that an intelligent man could not be wholly disconnected from modern life.
Key points
- Lee Child said Reacher’s extreme distance from technology had become implausible.
