Susan Collins enlists Manchin to reach Maine moderates as she distances herself from Trump

A record in tough races

Collins has repeatedly survived difficult reelection campaigns and performed better than other Republicans. In 2020, she won by more than 8 points, while Trump lost Maine by 9 points. Her campaign is aimed at voters across political affiliations, as she makes the case that she can work with people who disagree with her.

Collins rejects a Trump remark

During a visit to a New Balance factory, Collins was asked about Trump envoy Steve Witkoff describing Russian President Vladimir Putin as a “humanitarian” after the release of a jailed U.S. citizen. Manchin shook his head as the question was raised, and Collins answered, “no.”

Jackson questions her opposition

Democratic challenger Troy Jackson disputes the sincerity of Collins’ criticism. At a debate last week, he argued that, as chair of the appropriations committee, she could cut off funding for the war if she wanted it to stop.
