Elizabeth Holmes documentary is crushing it at the box office: how much it made
A standout documentary debut
You Can See Everything brought in $15 million across the United States and Canada in its opening weekend, The Numbers reported. The industry publication’s figures make it the strongest documentary opening of the year.
Melania, released in January, ranks second among documentary openings this year. Its first weekend brought in $7.1 million, less than half the total reported for Fielder’s film.
Strong ratings from viewers
The film’s commercial performance is accompanied by high scores on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics gave it a 99% rating, while regular audiences scored it 98%. Business Insider reporter Henry Chandonnet has watched the film twice. He described it as “one of the most shocking, revelatory, and oddly funny films” he had seen, and said it was “twisty” and worth viewing with fresh eyes.
The story behind Theranos
Directed by Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, the documentary portrays Holmes and the company she led, Theranos. The company was once valued at $9 billion and claimed its technology could conduct hundreds of medical tests from a finger-prick blood sample.
Investigations found that Theranos was secretly using costly laboratory equipment to run tests. Holmes was convicted of defrauding investors and received an 11-year federal prison sentence after journalist John Carreyrou published an investigative report in The Wall Street Journal; criminal charges followed.
