Four Killed in Canadian Military Base Fire; Death Toll Confirmed, Cause Under Investigation

Fire tears through Wainwright base
The blaze broke out at around 16:00 local time on Saturday at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, a military training site in rural Alberta. Prime Minister Carney described it as a violent, fast-moving fire, but did not say what started it.
The Municipal District of Wainwright said high winds helped the fire spread quickly. The base is about 120 miles from Edmonton and 180 miles from Calgary.
Four deaths confirmed
Carney said on Sunday that four service members had died. Their names have not been released, but their families have been informed. Before Carney spoke, Canadian media reported seven deaths, citing unnamed military sources. The confirmed figure from Carney was four.
Cause remains unknown
The Canadian defence ministry said the cause is under investigation. It added that there are currently no indications the fire resulted from terrorist activity. Dozens of people were seriously injured. Ambulances arrived at a hospital, where a doctor told CBC that staff had been overwhelmed by the number of patients.
