Madueke shows a new level of anger and conviction to prove he is more than a finisher

A decisive moment against Forest

Madueke’s winning goal against Nottingham Forest showed why Mikel Arteta values him, even when he is not in the starting lineup. The England international has started just one top-flight match this season, a 2-1 victory over Leeds.

Arteta expected a tight contest against an organised Forest side at the City Ground. He said he believed the game would open up as players tired, creating more space and better opportunities for Arsenal.

A chance to earn more starts

Arsenal had pursued Vinicius Jr and Julian Alvarez, but Christos Tzolis was the only new arrival in that position, brought in to replace Leandro Trossard. Tzolis is now sidelined with a hamstring injury sustained while playing for Greece, giving Madueke an opportunity to press his case.

Madueke also started on the right wing against Lille in the Champions League on Tuesday and assisted the opening goal. He said he had beaten his opponent on the outside before choosing to cut inside and shoot.

Arteta praises his progress

Arteta said Madueke was in a good moment and was showing another level of anger and conviction in his actions. He added that the winger was becoming decisive in matches, which was expected of him.

Arteta uses the word “finishers” for substitutes, stressing their importance to the squad. Bruno Guimaraes scored from the bench against Leeds, while Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard helped create Arsenal’s final two goals against Lille.

A direct threat for Arsenal

Some Arsenal supporters have not always warmed to Madueke since his move from Chelsea. Since his £48.5m arrival, however, he has helped the club win its first title in 22 years and played a major role in its run to the Champions League final.
