After prison sentences and arrests, twenty-four Romanian men deported from Ireland on charter flight from Dublin

Flight to Bucharest
The charter flight departed Dublin Airport on Sunday afternoon and later reached Bucharest. Twenty-four Romanian men were removed from Ireland on the flight. The men were aged between 24 and 57. Removal orders were enforced under the Free Movement Directive.
Custody before removal
Eighteen of the men had served prison sentences and were taken directly from Irish Prison Service custody for removal. The remaining six were arrested and detained in different parts of Ireland. Those six were placed in custody before they were removed from the country.
Re-entry bans imposed
Each man was given a ban preventing him from returning to Ireland for up to 10 years. Garda personnel, medical staff, interpreters and a human rights observer accompanied the group.
Mr O’Callaghan said restricting European citizens’ freedom of movement was not a decision he took lightly. He said criminal behaviour could lead to consequences, and described charter flights and removal orders as part of his effort to take effective action.
