Prices test latino voters who helped trump back to the white house as they weigh their next move

Voters weigh economic promises

Martinez said he felt misled and was unsure whether he would vote in the midterms. He described moving from the right back toward the political middle.

Arizona district draws attention

Casa Grande, a town of 70,000 between Phoenix and Tucson, lies partly within Arizona’s 6th Congressional District, one of the country’s historically closest contests. Republican Juan Ciscomani is seeking a third term after winning by 2.5 percentage points two years ago; Trump won the district by less than 1 point.

Ciscomani has emphasized his immigrant background and presents himself as independent and bipartisan, without directly criticizing Trump or his policies. Democrat JoAnna Mendoza, a former Marine and the daughter of immigrant farmworkers, says voters trust candidates who understand their community and way of life.

Some voters stay Republican

Chris Durant, 61, said he would probably vote Republican again. He said he and his wife were not worried about gas prices as they loaded groceries for his mother-in-law.

The candidates are appealing to voters with different experiences and priorities. The result may help determine whether Democrats can gain ground in a district where the last presidential and congressional races were narrowly decided.

Polls show rising disapproval

During the 2024 campaign, Trump made broad gains among Hispanic voters. AP VoteCast found that about 7 in 10 Hispanic voters were very concerned about food and grocery costs, slightly more than the share of voters overall, and Trump had a clear advantage among them.

Key points

  • Martinez says rising costs and the conflict with Iran have left him disappointed in Trump.
  • Arizona’s 6th Congressional District is a key contest for both parties.
  • Ciscomani is seeking a third term against Democrat JoAnna Mendoza.
  • Polls show substantial Hispanic voter disapproval of Trump’s economic performance.
