Sony Xperia 10 VI: Why the Promised Android 17 Upgrade Is Not Getting Released

Android 17 upgrade withdrawn

Sony launched the Xperia 10 VI with Android 14 and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chipset more than two years ago. Its promise of three major OS updates included Android 17, due this year.

A notice on Sony’s UK support site now says the phone will not receive that upgrade. Sony apologized, saying the decision falls short of its original announcement.

Storage limits cited

Sony said a “detailed technical assessment” found limitations in the phone’s storage configuration. The company concluded that the Xperia 10 VI could not support an Android 17 upgrade experience it considered adequate.

Sony therefore decided not to make the upgrade available. The notice does not provide further details about the storage limitation.

Security support continues

Although OS updates for the Xperia 10 VI are ending, Sony says it will continue providing security updates for four years, expected to last until June 2028. The company says the decision applies only to the Xperia 10 VI’s technical specifications and does not affect promised OS updates for other Xperia models. The technical requirements of future Android versions are not yet known, leaving uncertainty about how future updates will affect Sony’s devices.
