First photos show pope celebrating Mass since surgery for cancer diagnosis, released by Vatican amid recovery signs

Photos show Mass celebration

The Vatican published images of Leo celebrating Mass after his lung surgery. The release came as doctors reported that tests showed continued improvement in his recovery. In his homily, Leo thanked hospital staff for their daily care of sick people and for the support they had given him, Bruni said.

Doctors describe recovery

A medical update said Leo’s recovery after surgery allows him to carry out normal daily activities completely on his own. It was signed by his personal physician, Dr. Luigi Carbone, and Gemelli hospital thoracic surgery head Dr. Stefano Margaritora.

The 71-year-old pope had the lower lobe of his right lung removed on Oct. 13 after doctors found a suspected cancerous nodule. The operation confirmed adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer.

Sunday appearance confirmed

Bruni said Leo would make his first public appearance on Sunday and deliver the traditional noontime prayer. Officials had considered different ways for him to say the Angelus, including a possible live broadcast from Gemelli hospital.

The Vatican did not initially clarify where the prayer would take place. Vatican media personnel were seen laying cables at the hospital for a possible broadcast.

Travel plans and messages

The Vatican published a list of journalists accredited to travel with Leo on a Nov. 6–17 trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. His ability to make the journey had been in question, and the Vatican can change its plans.

Cardinal Parolin said there could be no predictions about when or under what circumstances Leo would return. He said the pope could adjust his pontificate if needed, based on medical advice and other factors. The Vatican also released photos of get-well notes from patients in Gemelli’s pediatric oncology ward.
