After serving 7 years, amber guyger, former dallas police officer, released from prison in botham jean case

Shooting in Jean’s apartment
Guyger fatally shot Jean in September 2018, inside the apartment where he lived. The two were neighbors in the same apartment building. Guyger said she mistakenly parked on the fourth floor of the building’s garage, went into Jean’s apartment rather than her own, and believed he was an intruder. She was convicted in connection with his death.
Parole rules and restrictions
Guyger has been released after serving seven years in prison, and will serve the rest of her sentence under supervision. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice says she cannot live in Dallas County, contact Jean’s family or Dallas police officers, or leave Texas without approval. Earlier this month, her attorney, Robert Rodgers, told CBS News Texas that Guyger continues to feel regret about the shooting.
Family and attorney respond
Jean’s family said Guyger’s parole was reported two days after they remembered Jean on what would have been his birthday. The family thanked people who continue to honor his life and keep his memory alive.
Lee Merritt, who previously represented Jean’s family, said he was “deeply disappointed” by the parole decision. He said the family and community had opposed parole and argued that a 10-year sentence was already far shorter than the loss they endured.
