WATCH: Zacharia says White House has asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign

White House press secretary Katie Zacharia said Tuesday that Kimberly Guilfoyle had been asked to resign as U.S. ambassador to Greece. The request follows allegations of improper and potentially illegal conduct before and during her time in Athens.

President Donald Trump had said Monday that his administration was reviewing the situation and was unhappy. The Associated Press had reported that Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were displeased and might decide Guilfoyle’s future this week.

The Wall Street Journal has reported allegations including a threat to a Greek official, improper gifts and services, and an offer to use her government influence in connection with a large credit card bill.

Guilfoyle has not responded to the reports directly. Her attorneys deny wrongdoing, saying money she sought from a Trump donor was for previously unpaid speaking engagements and public appearances.

Her lawyers also said she followed State Department guidance and travel rules for private-plane trips. Zacharia called Guilfoyle an asset to the team and said the White House wished her well; the article does not specify when she is expected to leave.
