Pope Leo Undergoes ‘Successful’ Surgery to Remove Lung Nodule, Vatican Says

Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery on Tuesday to remove a lung nodule, and the Vatican said the operation was successful and finished as expected.

The 71-year-old pope went to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital earlier that day, where well-wishers greeted him. He waved to them as he arrived.

Leo had announced the planned procedure during his Sunday Angelus address. The Vatican said the surgery was led by Gemelli’s chief thoracic surgeon, Stefano Margaritora.

The Vatican canceled the pope’s audiences through Oct. 20, and CBS reported he was expected to remain in the hospital for a week. Oncologists quoted by CBS said the outlook would be excellent even if the nodule proved cancerous, given its early removal.
