Free up space on an Android phone

Android shows what fills your phone and offers a "Free up space" tool.

    Step 1: Settings, Storage

    Open Settings and tap Storage to see what uses the space.

    Step 2: Tap Free up space

    Tap Free up space. Pick a category, tap Select files, choose what to delete, then Move files to Trash.

    Step 3: Turn on Smart Storage

    In Free up space, tap Menu, then Settings, and turn on Smart Storage. It clears photos that are already backed up when space runs low.

Good to know: Google notes some of these steps work only on Android 14 and up. Settings can look a little different on each phone.
