Newspaper headlines: Briton dies in Krakow shootings as royals honour the fallen

Remembrance on Sunday front pages

The Sunday Express reported that veterans wait, on average, more than nine months for compensation for physical and mental injuries. Campaigners urged Prime Minister Andy Burnham to act on what they called a battle with bureaucracy.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said the department was working to deliver compensation to eligible people as quickly as possible. The spokesperson said overtime and weekend work were being used to address outstanding claims, with priority given to terminally ill applicants.

Krakow death and court case

The Sunday Times reported that a Briton was killed in central Krakow by a gunman, according to Polish authorities. Five others were also killed. The paper also reported that Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, wanted to assist the FBI investigation into her father. Thomas Markle has been charged with possession of child abuse images and has previously denied wrongdoing, the report said.

Brand conviction leads coverage

The Daily Star led with Brand’s conviction and featured an interview with Georgina Baillie. Brand had spoken about her in lewd language during a BBC radio broadcast in 2008; Baillie said justice had been served, the paper reported.

Politics, security and other reports

The Sunday Mirror and the Mirror reported on an interview in which Burnham said closer ties with the EU would benefit families across the UK. The Mirror said he planned to use a Brussels summit on 20 November to pave the way for closer relations.

The Observer featured Palestine Action co-founder Huda Ammori, who is challenging the group’s proscription at the Supreme Court. Ammori said the group’s banning under anti-terror laws last year was beyond its comprehension.

The Observer also reported that security experts believed recent cyber-attacks on supermarket fridges and freezers across Europe were intended to disrupt, not make money. The Sun said King Charles III would consider a China visit if asked by the government; the Mail reported that he was expected to invite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the UK.
