Notre Dame’s 21-Point Lead Nearly Vanishes as Dame Beats Miami No. 1 in Massive Statement Win

Irish Build and Protect Lead

Notre Dame took a 17-3 lead into halftime and moved ahead 24-3 early in the second half. Miami rallied, but a late fourth-down pass that could have tied the game was knocked away.

The Irish then used most of the remaining clock, leaving Miami roughly 40 seconds, before closing out the 31-24 victory. The result ended a run of time without a major win since the 2024 College Football Playoff.

Carr Delivers Through Air

The performance helped Notre Dame secure a win over the top-ranked Hurricanes. The victory also kept the team’s national championship hopes alive.

Defense Makes Key Stops

Notre Dame’s defense was missing Drayk Bowen, and its defensive line rotation had taken a hit the previous week. Cornerback Leonard Moore also missed multiple series after being injured just after halftime; Miami scored touchdowns on both possessions he missed.

The Irish run defense limited Miami to 72 yards on 27 carries, excluding Mark Fletcher’s 29-yard run. Luke Talich intercepted a Darian Mensah pass near midfield after Miami scored on consecutive third-quarter possessions, helping slow the comeback.

Playoff Hopes Remain Alive

After Talich’s interception, Notre Dame overcame a holding penalty, completed a fourth-down pass to Nolan James, Jr., and scored to restore a two-score lead early in the fourth quarter. Three regular-season games remain: Boston College, SMU and Syracuse. Notre Dame’s account says a First Round bye is possible if the team handles those games, and that the win gives the Irish a significant step toward the College Football Playoff.
