Near $110M Break-Even, Clayface Hits Major Global Box Office Milestone in Five Times the Time James Gunn’s Superman Took for DC

A slower milestone crossing
Clayface opened on October 23 with the weakest domestic debut among the DCU’s three films. Its second-weekend decline was 54.2%, closer to Superman’s 53.2% drop than Supergirl’s 76.8%.
Warner Bros. projected that the film would finish its third weekend with $109 million worldwide: $56.6 million from domestic theaters and $52.4 million from international markets. It reached the $100 million milestone around day 16, more than five times slower than Superman, which got there on day three, and nearly a week behind Supergirl, which did so on day 10.
Horror audience and budget
Unlike the previous DCU films, both rated PG-13, Clayface is an R-rated body horror release. It is the sixth R-rated horror movie of 2026 to pass $100 million globally and has outgrossed more than a dozen other titles.
The film reportedly cost $44 million to make, far less than Superman’s reported $225 million budget or Supergirl’s reported cost of $170 million to $186 million. Its estimated break-even point is around $110 million, leaving it about $1 million short of that figure at the projected global total.
What the results could mean
Superman earned $618.7 million worldwide, while Supergirl made $126.4 million. Clayface’s performance may point to diminishing returns for the franchise, but comparisons are difficult because its next big-budget installment will most likely be PG-13 rather than an R-rated horror movie.
