Animated Revenge to FBI Cases: 8 Thriller Shows Ranked as 10/10 Masterpieces

Animation with relentless momentum

Netflix’s Blue Eye Samurai takes place in 17th-century Edo-period Japan. It follows Mizu, a swordswoman who disguises herself as a man while hunting four white men illegally living in the country.

Inspired by Akira Kurosawa and characters including Zatoichi and the Man with No Name, the series combines cinematic animation with fast pacing and action. Maya Erskine voices Mizu, whose journey anchors the revenge story.

A slow-burning FBI investigation

Created by Joe Penhall and executive-produced by Charlize Theron and David Fincher, Netflix’s Mindhunter adapts John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker’s book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit. Its story follows two FBI agents in the late 1970s who interview incarcerated killers to better understand their psychology and catch active murderers.

The series builds its investigations as puzzles for the agents and viewers. Its slow-developing narrative, dialogue and performances earned praise, though it ended after two seasons.

Crime history meets action

Netflix’s Narcos follows the rise and spread of cocaine drug cartels around the world, alongside law enforcement’s efforts to confront them. The crime drama combines real-world history with fictional elements and action.

Wagner Moura’s performance as Pablo Escobar is singled out as a major strength. The show’s antiheroes and antagonists help drive its story as both a docudrama and a thriller.

Two franchise passages diverge

The text then shifts to commentary about the Wick films, describing an underworld governed by etiquette and a hero shaped by focus, commitment and will. It also addresses the reader directly, portraying them as reasonable until reaching a firm boundary.

A later passage turns to a franchise that moves from street racing to space while keeping loyalty at its center. It describes a found family willing to defend one another, but the passage ends mid-sentence while introducing a team and a plan.
