Weak free-agent class makes 5 most likely trade candidates during mlb offseason worth watching

Marte’s Trade Window

Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte could be an attractive alternative to the available free-agent options. But his relationship with the organization has reportedly suffered after he disappeared during a key August series against the Red Sox, while fans have grown frustrated with his antics.

Marte hit .249/.316/.432 with 22 home runs and 31 doubles in 624 plate appearances in 2026, below his usual level. He is due to gain 10-5 rights in April, after 10 years in the majors and five in Arizona, allowing him to reject a trade.

Duran Could Leave Boston

Jarren Duran reached at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases for the second time in his career in 2026. His overall season was poor: he batted .207/.266/.361 in 608 plate appearances, and his .627 OPS was described as the lowest in MLB history for a 20/20 player.

Duran has drawn attention for his conduct on and off the field and has been part of trade speculation for several years. Boston’s crowded outfield could make a move possible this offseason.

Paredes and Detmers

Reid Detmers also could draw interest after returning to the rotation in 2026. He posted a 3.36 ERA and 1.038 WHIP, with 48 walks, while facing a career-high 211 batters. He has two years of team control remaining and could build on that season.

Larnach’s Market and Fit

Trevor Larnach was reportedly headed to Houston in a deal for reliever Bryan Abreu, but Astros owner Jim Crane vetoed the trade. Larnach remained with Minnesota and hit .269/.352/.436, with 13 home runs and 23 doubles in 433 plate appearances.

Key points

  • A weak free-agent class could increase activity on the trade market.
  • Marte may gain the right to refuse a trade in April.
  • Boston’s outfield depth could make Duran available this offseason.
  • Larnach is set to reach free agency after the season.
