Scotland’s familiar frailties brutally exposed as All Blacks deliver a schooling at Murrayfield

A sharp change after half-time

Scotland went into the break with Ewan Ashman having completed a hat-trick and Murrayfield buzzing. The opening period had offered plenty of excitement, but New Zealand took control after the restart.

Barrett scored his second try in the 51st minute as the All Blacks began to pull away. They scored 19 unanswered second-half points and reached 43 with 12 minutes to play.

Recurring problems under pressure

After the match, Townsend and his players pointed to missed first-half chances, poor discipline, breakdown struggles, ball security and the field position they allowed New Zealand to gain. The report argues these weaknesses are familiar rather than new.

Scotland’s defensive record has also raised concerns. They conceded five tries against the Pumas last autumn, while a win over France brought 50 points for Scotland but also 40 conceded and six tries against.

New Zealand seize the moment

The All Blacks’ second-half performance showed their ability to handle a hostile away setting against a dangerous opponent. They used a lineout deception involving two decoy runners, a tactic that had already appeared this season, to catch Scotland out.

Dave Rennie, formerly head coach of Glasgow Warriors, returned to Scotland with New Zealand. The report says the All Blacks are improving, though not yet at South Africa’s level.

Scotland turn to Australia

Townsend now has to rebuild the squad’s morale before the next match, against the Wallabies next Sunday. Scotland have won four of their past five meetings with Australia, all during Townsend’s tenure. The team will be expected to make that five wins in six, but the defeat has renewed questions about whether Scotland can make opponents work harder and defend consistently.
