How Michael Connelly’s 68-Episode Detective Show Perfects Adapting Books for TV

A long-running detective drama

Bosch debuted in February 2014 and ended in June 2021 after seven seasons and 68 episodes. Titus Welliver plays Harry Bosch, an LAPD homicide detective investigating murders while confronting corruption among fellow officers.

The series draws on Connelly’s novels, including a body of work spanning more than 44 books. Twenty-five of those novels feature Bosch, the author’s central detective character.

Books reshaped for television

Rather than follow one Bosch novel in each season, the show blended stories and details from multiple books. Its first season, for example, drew elements from The Concrete Blonde, Echo Park and City of Bones.

The adaptation also changed Bosch himself. Though still guarded and blunt, he is more willing to work with others on screen than in Connelly’s novels, giving the series room to build relationships among its characters.

The franchise expands

The original series helped launch Bosch: Legacy, which Welliver described as a continuation of the show, and the 2025 spinoff Ballard. Maggie Q stars as Renee Ballard, a detective who specializes in cold cases.

Welliver appeared as Bosch in three of Ballard’s 10 first-season episodes. The character’s more collaborative portrayal in the original series helped make it possible for the franchise to follow his connections with other detectives.

Key points

  • Bosch ran for seven seasons and 68 episodes on Prime Video.
  • The show combined material from several Michael Connelly novels rather than adapting one book per season.
  • Titus Welliver’s Bosch is more collaborative on screen than in the novels.
  • Bosch: Legacy and Ballard extended the franchise.
