One-Screen Launcher Makes 7 DS Pokémon Games Playable on Modded Nintendo Switch
Seven titles on one screen
The games supported are Pokémon HeartGold, SoulSilver, Platinum, Black, White, Black 2 and White 2. The single-screen mod adapts their menus, user interface and gameplay so they work without the DS’s two screens.
The mod is available for PC and can also run on a modded Nintendo Switch. Its widescreen support expands the view to show more of the surroundings rather than stretching the original image.
How the launcher works
The project is not a native port. Creator mamesj built on ssrecomp, a project forked from work by ClickingMaster, and used contributions from members of the decomp community.
The download is a launcher, not a collection of game files. It uses the melonDS emulator core and custom modifications to run users’ existing, legally obtained ROMs.
Access and limitations
The setup offers a way to play these DS titles on newer hardware, including for people deterred by high resale prices. Physical copies of games such as HeartGold can sell for hundreds of dollars on the secondhand market.
A modded Switch is required to use the launcher on Nintendo’s console, so it does not make the games available to every Switch owner. The story describes an official native release as preferable for broader access, but none is provided by this project.
