43 Years Ago, The X-Men Changed Forever As Marvel Took One Hero From Good to God-Tier

A defining moment for Wolverine
Wolverine had already appeared alongside the Hulk and joined the X-Men, but he had not yet become the icon readers know today. Writer Chris Claremont delivered a turning point in Uncanny X-Men No. 133, published in 1980.
The story spans Uncanny X-Men Nos. 132–134. Chris Claremont and John Byrne wrote the issues, Byrne penciled them, and Terry Austin inked them.
The Hellfire Club strikes
The X-Men tried to infiltrate a Hellfire Club gathering, but the villains were ready for them and quickly defeated the team. Harold Leland, the club’s Black Bishop, used his mutant ability to increase mass and sent Wolverine crashing into the sewer.
Leland expected Logan to drown while the other X-Men remained captives. Instead, Wolverine rose from the water and declared, “Okay, suckers—you’ve taken your best shot! Now it’s my turn!” The scene became one of the character’s most recognizable moments.
Logan fights alone
The Hellfire Club sent its knights to check whether Wolverine was dead. They found him alive, and he attacked them as he searched for his captured friends, who might have been in danger.
Jean Grey, under mind control, fought Logan but briefly broke free of Mastermind’s influence and released Cyclops. With his teammates freed, Wolverine faced Leland again and sent the Black Bishop crashing through the floor.
Careful tactics build his legend
The issues distinguished Wolverine by placing him at the center of the rescue, without Cyclops, Professor Xavier, or Storm directing him to hold back. He had to make his way through the Hellfire Club on his own.
Rather than rely on wild attacks, Logan moved cautiously and chose his actions with care. The story gave his fighting a clear purpose and helped lay the groundwork for the popular Marvel character he became.
