The week’s CBS Sunday Morning lineup explores the SS United States’ planned fate as a Florida reef

The ship’s final destination

The SS United States, once the fastest ocean liner in history, carried four presidents, celebrities and many thousands of passengers during nearly two decades of service. The jet age ended its working life, and the ship remained docked in Philadelphia for close to 30 years.

It is now scheduled to sink off Florida’s coast and become the world’s largest artificial reef. Correspondent Lee Cowan revisits the vessel’s past and future; an archival report by Mark Strassmann explores its history and Philadelphia berth.

People, art and performance

In Netflix’s new series “The Altruists,” three-time Emmy Award winner Julia Garner plays Caroline Ellison, Sam Bankman-Fried’s girlfriend and a business partner in a cryptocurrency fraud. Garner speaks with correspondent Anthony Mason about her acting roles and the hope she finds in watching movies. Brandon Flowers, frontman of The Killers, speaks with Luke Burbank about his third solo album, “Thrasher,” its country-western songs and the influence of his family and hometown, Nephi, Utah.

Reflection and remembrance

Historian Jon Meacham reflects on the week’s midterm elections and the ideals of equality, dignity, fair play and the rule of law. The program also remembers notable people who died this week.

An archival profile revisits conductor Herbert Blomstedt, who died Nov. 4, 2026, at 99. The 2025 report featured Blomstedt discussing his continued work with major symphony orchestras at age 98.
