Upset Potential and Favorites: Predicting Every 2026 NWSL Playoffs Quarterfinal Matchup

San Diego faces Utah

San Diego enters the playoffs as a clear favorite after raising its level this season. The Wave combine strong defending with quality passing and can break down a low block or attack quickly in transition.

Utah’s aggressive press, set pieces and compact defending could make the Royals difficult opponents. But Cece Delzer, Narumi Miura and Mina Tanaka are questionable, and San Diego’s healthier roster gives it a slight edge. The Wave’s ability to keep possession without losing defensive solidity could decide the match.

Kansas City hosts Angel City

Kansas City Current is favored as the No. 4 seed, backed by its dangerous transition attack and undefeated home record. Angel City arrives with confidence after a 10-match unbeaten run, relying on aggressive pressing and improved midfield organization.

Angel City could be exposed if quick counters find space or risky passes lead to turnovers. Effective pressure in midfield, however, could disrupt the hosts. Kansas City has the upper hand, but the matchup could produce an upset.

Gotham meets Seattle again

Gotham brings defensive strength, squad depth and home advantage into the quarterfinal. The 2026 NWSL Shield winners have also beaten Seattle twice this season. Seattle is comfortable defending deep and can make matches tight and low-scoring. The Reign scored twice in one of the regular-season meetings, offering some encouragement, but Maddie Dahlien will be unavailable. Jess Fishlock has carried Seattle through many moments across 14 seasons; whether she can lead the team to the semifinals remains uncertain.

Washington takes on Portland

Washington may be stronger on paper, but inconsistent late-season form, departures and injuries have created concerns. Hal Hershfelt is the latest injury issue, and the Spirit can struggle to move the ball through central areas.

Leicy Santos has returned after almost two months out, while Trinity Rodman gives Washington a player capable of deciding a game quickly. The Spirit’s defensive structure is stronger than Portland’s, but the Thorns have Sophia Wilson and several long-range scoring threats, including Kaiya Hanks, Morgan Weaver and Marie Müller. Jessie Fleming has also partnered well with Nina Nijstad in midfield.

Key points

  • San Diego’s possession and healthier roster give the Wave an edge against Utah.
  • Kansas City is favored at home, but Angel City’s pressing could create upset potential.
  • Gotham has home advantage and two regular-season wins over Seattle.
  • Washington’s form and injuries raise questions, while Portland has multiple attacking threats.
